Prednisone is known to cause birth defects in animals in high
doses - as per clinical trials. Patients taking Prednisone have
higher chances of having a child with low birth weight and may have
a higher risk of stillbirth. However many successful pregnancies
have been reported in women receiving this drug.
Precaution while using the drug
Inform
your doctor properly and follow all the guidelines and directions
that are recommended to you by him/her
Internal cortisones increase blood sugar and blood
pressure. They may worsen diabetes and hypertension. Internal cortisones
can also worsen or activate peptic ulcers. Inform your doctor if
you have ever had a stomach or duodenal ulcer
Unfortunately, when cortisones are used for many months
or years, serious side effects are common. Long-term cortisone treatment
is recommended only when a disease threatens or seriously disturbs
a patient's life.
When cortisones are take daily for long periods of
time, the skin can thin and bruise quite easy. Daily application
of alpha hydroxyacids can help to lessen these side effects.
There have been rare cases of people becoming psychotic
or depressed during short treatments of Prednisone. Special attention
is required for such cases
There also are cases of people developing osteonecrosis
of the hip while on short-term Prednisone. This problem can only
be treated by total hip replacement that requires a major operation
People with glaucoma should not take Prednisone without
asking their eye doctor. Prednisone can cause glaucoma to occur in
people who have never had it before.
